A cousin of mine who lives abroad called to me right be shock of my life. Ever since I met him, I had told her everything about our relationship. Her call came through shortly after I had sent her the pre-wedding pictures. After exchanging pleasantries, her voice lost its cheerfulness. That could only mean one thing-something was wrong.
"Did you and your fiance get tested in the hospital?"
"I suggested it but he kicked against it because we already know our genotype and we are compatible," I replied.
"Farha, there are other tests required apart from that," Hafsah said softly.
"Oh you mean like that of HIV?" I asked jokingly.
"Yes! Its not funny Farha, call him up right now and don't just 'suggest' it, ask him to go with yiu to the hospital immediately!" Hafsah ordered. There was something in her tone that scared me. I couldn't understand why she was persistent. I concluded that it was because she is a medical doctor.
I immediately called Faruq and did as my cousin suggested but Alas! I saw a side of him that I had never seen before. He exploded like a bomb! Before I could defend my request he started calling names, raining curses, making threats. Faruq even went to the extent of breaking off our engagement just two days to the wedding! I fell into shock. I could not believe my ears. My head started to spin, I could not process anything. I was about to collapse when my mother grabbed me.
" Farha! What is wrong with you?"
"He called off the wedding!" I whispered before I blacked out. I woke up in a strange place with a drip connected to my vein.
"Farha, you're awake!" My mother exclaimed.
I was a little confused. Moments later however, I remembered everything as though it had just happened.
" I only asked for a test," I said with tears dripping from my eyes.
"You were right to ask for the test my dear! He got upset because he was hiding something from you," Mummy said calmly.
"What?"
"Hafsah said he was once her patient. He was diagnosed with HIV. She remembers his face because he broke down in her office and she had to counsel him for long before he was convinced that he could still live a normal life," Mummy narrated.
I was surprised at first, then scared and then I felt grateful. I had been rescued from the chains of a heartless liar.
"It turned out that he had lived a wild life back in school before he repented but it was too late. I hope you all have learnt something from my story. Thank you very much," Farha said and stood up to leave.
We were all so touched by her story that we walked back to the hostel in silence.
